Are careers fairs useful?
I bet as soon as you read the words “careers fair”, your brain just switched off and your soul went into sleep mode. Sound dull, don’t they? Well actually, they might just be more useful than you think.
Careers and jobs fairs are actually fantastic ways to boost your employment prospects. Not only are they free to attend for everyone (great for poor students!) they are informal and allow you to meet up with prospective employers on a friendly basis. You can then learn more about the company itself and sometimes even apply for vacancies there.
Remember, a careers fair is essentially a way for you to interview the company, and find out if you’d really like to work there! You can ask as many nosey questions as you’d like, without being rejected from a job interview, and the fairs allow you to network in a less forced way.
Not only can you explore the jobs that you’re interested in, but you could also take a look at things you’ve never considered before. You never know, you could leave a job fair with completely different career aims!
“That’s all very well and good,” I hear you cry, “But where do I find these mysterious careers fairs?”
Well, that’s actually simple. If you decide to go to university, your institution and Students’ Union will hold careers-based events all the time, even as soon as Freshers’ Week begins. And if you don’t go to university, fear not! You can also head to those provided by The Job Fairs which are regular and scattered across the country. Check out the table below to see when a fair is coming to an area near you.

So now you have no excuse. Head to a job fair and get ahead on your career!
