Getting into forex – a handy career profile

At face value, there are many appealing aspects about becoming a full-time forex trader, not least the possibility to make large amounts of money through simply trading currencies, perhaps from the comfort of your home office. In reality however, it is a lot more complicated than that and in order to begin a serious career in the profession you will need a strong and varied skillset.

It’s a good idea to start off part-time and by practising through a free demo account from AxiTrader, before turning forex trading into your career. Currency trading isn’t for everyone either, so it is important to ensure you have the right skills and personality to succeed before going all in.

Essential Skills for Success

Forex trading requires a lot of varied skills, from patience to numerical ability. While a lot of these can be learned and developed over time, the following are necessary from the start.

Money Management

Seeing as forex trading is basically managing different kinds of money, managing it all effectively is vital. This involves being good at risk management, setting appropriate stop losses and knowing how to use leverage in a safe way.

Analytical

Every trader needs to be able to analyse data quickly. Most platforms provide much of the important data in charts and graphs, with traders needing to recognise trends in these and act accordingly upon the information. Often there won’t be much time to make the most of any opportunities too.

Focused

Trading forex is not a quick process to become rich. It requires a lot of dedication and the ability to remain focused throughout trading sessions.

Key Personality Traits

Unlike skills, it is hard and in some cases impossible, to actually teach personality traits. Yet still all of the below are required to become a good forex trader.

Psychologically Strong

Greed can lead to traders losing it all, while fear can stop them from making any money. The best forex traders are psychologically strong enough to keep their emotions separate from trading and not bow down to either of these factors.

Strategic

It is said that there are many types of trader. Yet only a few will actually be successful. Those with a plan or strategy, often part of the characteristics that make up the most organised of people.

Risk Taker

Being willing to take risks is the only thing that will truly lead to people becoming successful traders. You need to know how much risk to take and get the balance right, but those with fear of risks will have no chance.

If you fit most of this profile, then there’s no reason you can’t become a successful forex trader.
