If you already have a job it can sometimes be difficult to go about changing career. You may be reluctant to take such a big step for fear of it not working out well. Sometimes it’s tempting to just remain within your comfort zone. There are ways in which you can make changing career a lot easier though. If you really want to make it happen then you need to plan and prepare for the change.

We are going to take a look at what you should do if you want to change your career, and how you can make it happen. We will start with question you should first ask yourself, “Why do I want to change career”.

Why do you want to change career?

This is a really important question, and should be your starting point. There can be many reasons why people want to change career; some of them are good reasons to make the change, others are not. Firstly, it’s important to say that you should never make a hasty decision about changing career simply because you are unhappy or disillusioned in your current role. You should never underestimate familiarity and knowledge; would it make more sense to look for a new role with your current employer, or progression within the company, than to move on completely.

It’s also important not to be drawn in by someone else’s “wonderful career”. Just because your best friend loves their chosen career does not mean you will. Another reason which many people have for changing career is to take on a role which has previously been a hobby; such as IT. If this applies to you it’s important to remember that your love for something may diminish if it becomes your career.

Of course, you may consider all of these potential issues and still want to change career. That is fine. It’s asking yourself the question in the first place that is important; so that you know a career change is really what you want.

The financial aspect

One of the most important things you need to do, before you change career, is work out your finances. This means that you have to sit down and realistically examine what changing career will mean for you from a financial point of view.

Obviously, money is not everything but you do need to be able to continue living the life you know; doing so may be difficult if you are suddenly faced with money worries. Remember, you also need to consider the cost of any additional training or qualifications you need. It may be that you decide to build a little more financially before you embark on the change.

Training for a new career

If you are looking to change career you may need to undertake some training and/or gain a qualification in order to embark on the career of your choice. You can take a look at some of your training options at www.upskilled.edu.au.  The good thing about this type of online training is that you can fit it in with your current occupation. This means that you can keep working, and support yourself financially, while you gain the qualification you need to change career.

All of these are important processes that you need to complete if you want to make sure that changing career is as simple as possible.
