Be the only choice worth making

When you apply for a job, so will 62 other people. That is the current average. That means young people are entering into an immensely tough job market, one that is becoming harder to navigate and harder to succeed in. As such, it is imperative that you make yourself the most attractive candidate you can possibly be and make any prospective employer stop interviewing other people the moment they meet you. The last thing you want to do is lose out on your dream job because you didn’t do everything you could. As such, we have come up with a few easy hacks to help you shoot to the top of the ‘must employ’ pile.

First Impressions Are Everything

When you apply for a job, the first thing you are going to do is send off your CV; that is a fact. It is the employer’s way of screening candidates before enduring a lengthy and time-consuming interview process. As such, the HR team is going to really scrutinize what your CV says about you and make a decision – yes or no – based on this. So make sure you address your CV before you send it off. Speak to business owners, go online, attend seminars; anything you can do to know your layout is spot on, your experience is concentrated and your personality shines through. It may even be worth speaking to those in recruitment to see if they have any tips.

Be The Most Experienced

Your CV needs to say that you have an attractive amount of experience, the right attitude, and more skills than they ask for. So if you know what you want to do, or which sector you want to operate in, then go and get some work experience somewhere. Go and upskill yourself. Have that little something that makes you more attractive than the other people in the waiting room. If you want to get into property development, then why not go on a Boss training course and learn about Asbestos. If you want to get into film distribution, why not get some on-set experience that will give you an added edge over those who just have marketing degrees. The more ticks you get your name the better.

Testimonials Sell

This is an area often up for debate, but we believe that a great reference should be shown-off at the earliest possible moment. If you have a shining recommendation from a previous employer or a reputable company in a certain industry, that is going to go a long way in swaying those on the other side of the desk. But don’t be too obvious about the way you present it. Don’t stick on the end of your CV, but be clever about it. Use it on your LinkedIn profile because, chances are, the HR team is going to Google you, and LinkedIn is one of the most used resources on that front. So get a great reference, one that understands you and your career path, your attitude and work ethic, and use it. Skills can be taught, but personality cannot.
