How to make working in a desk job more comfortable

Anyone who has made the transition from a job with regular movement to an office job knows that it can be a drastic adjustment. Sitting in one place for eight or more hours a day will wreak havoc on your body if you don’t take measures to stay comfortable. These tips will help you make working in a desk job more comfortable.

Leave your desk frequently

Sitting in one spot for more than 30 minutes at a time can cause your muscles to stiffen and leave you feeling fatigued. Combat tight muscles by getting up and walking around at least once an hour. You can walk around your desk, refill your coffee, grab a snack or use the restroom. Moving your muscles also combats the weariness you often feel around the middle of the work day.

Get a high-quality desk chair

If you don’t have a good desk chair, you may as well not have one. A chair that supports your spine and sits at the perfect height is one of the best ways to stay comfortable throughout the work day. Choose a height setting that keeps your eyes level with the computer screen to avoid straining your neck and shoulder muscles by having to look up or down. If you notice any twisting or tight muscles, see if your chair might be the cause.

Consider a convertible desk

If you are the type of person who does not like sitting, you may want to consider a desk that converts to a standing desk. With a standing desk you complete all of your work on your feet. It is far better for your muscles and circulatory system to stand at least part of the day. If there is a task where sitting is essential, you can easily convert the desk back to a traditional position.

Stay limber

No matter how many precautions you take, some days you leave the office feeling stiff and achy. Stretching for around 10 minutes a day can instantly unwind muscle kinks. Make it a priority each day when you come home from work. Many people also find regular visits to a chiropractor to be helpful. Enlisting the services of a good chiropractor to adjust your spine and massage your muscles makes your stretching sessions more effective. Some people like chiropractic electrical stimulation while others might benefit from lumbar decompression exercises. Ask your doctor or chiropractor what they recommend.

Taking care of your comfort at the office leads to better productivity and helps keep your immune system in good working order. Follow these tips to enjoy your play time free of aches and pains.
