Finding a niche that you are most passionate about can set the stage for a successful, productive career. These are some careers that you may consider if you want to save the environment.
Environmental law
Environmental laws at national and local levels are increasingly complex. While existing laws are revised periodically, new laws are also introduced. This is a dynamic area of the law that offers numerous specialisations that you may focus on, such as corporate environmental law. If you choose to focus on environmental law, you may consider pursuing an undergraduate degree in environmental science, chemistry, biology or a related field. This will provide you with a strong foundation to analyse data that may be used in your cases.
Environmental engineering
Environmental engineering involves designing eco-friendly buildings as well as identifying building processes that can be improved upon to protect the environment. Some of these processes include waste management, hazardous waste containment, environmental site inspections and more. Some universities offer a specific degree in environmental engineering, but these programs can be difficult to find. Keep in mind that any type of engineering degree may be used to make environmentally-friendly buildings and products or to improve various processes.
Hydrologist
Hydrology is a specialised field that many people are not familiar with, but it provides you with a profound way to make a difference in the world. As a hydrologist, you may study groundwater or surface water to determine environmental impacts on water quality and availability. Physical samples, computer modelling and in-depth analysis are part of the typical duties of a hydrologist. Generally, a hydrologist has a degree in earth sciences or geo-science with a specialisation in hydrology. However, a few colleges offer a degree in hydrology.
Keep in mind that these are only some of the many areas that you can focus your professional efforts on in order to work toward environmental health. Everything from school teachers educating future generations to general contractors who focus on building green homes can play a role through their various professional functions. Find a field that you are passionate about, and determine how you can apply your environmental enthusiasm to that field.
