What you need to consider about becoming an actor

When thinking about careers in a serious capacity, it isn’t very often that we are told to stick with our dreams. The truth is that purely creative careers aren’t for everyone. They are not the easiest way to make a living, for one. However, many people who go into acting go into it because there is nothing they enjoy more. That’s why, if you feel the need to act, here are some things you should consider about it as a career.

Acting with flexibility

Many people will consider that a job as an actor primarily means trying to get the big roles. Speaking roles in television and film. However, making a career out of it means acting with a degree of flexibility, regardless of what direction you want to go in. For example, you should be prepared to find whatever kind of roles can help you get spotted, as well as landing you a payday. This can mean anything from local theatre to working as an extra and in commercials. It’s always a good idea to keep in touch with local theatres and extras agencies to get the most opportunities you can coming your way. Both for the practice as well as the pay.

Plenty of education on offer

As just stated, looking into a variety of different jobs and roles can help you learn just as much as they can help you sustain a career. If you want to take an acting career seriously, it’s recommended that you get some sort of education to help you. Even if you have an innate talent and understand everything that there is to know, the experience alone is invaluable. That doesn’t mean that you necessarily need to earn a degree or other official certifications of acting. There are plenty of other learning environments that can provide much the same. What matters is that you’re given the space and direction to interact with others as an actor more than anything else.

Having a business mind

Acting isn’t a purely creative career, however. It’s as much about marketing and image as it is about talent. If you want to become an actor, it means you need to look at yourself like a business. It means showing a degree of commercial awareness. Understand what you’re able to sell about yourself. As well as how to market and emphasise it. This means taking care of your presentation, both physically and how you audition or send out your resume. Being frank with yourself and recognising roles that you are not as well suited to means better chances at finding jobs that fit. Understanding is key to success in any career and it’s no surprise that acting is no different.

Acting as a career is not for everyone. However, if you’re going to go for it, keep the above advice in mind. Be flexible. Learn as much about your craft as you can. Think of yourself and present yourself like a business. Remember that it’s a business, not just an aspiration.
