Building the world of tomorrow: Five reasons to become a civil engineer

Civil engineering is everywhere around us. Civil engineers are involved in the construction of everything from roads and highways, to bridges and dams. Their careers can be very varied and offer many challenges and rewards along the way. For this reason, it takes a lot of time and effort to become a civil engineer in the first place. Today we look at some reasons why this career path is worth the investment.

  1. Job Variety

Civil engineers build a massive range of things. Just looking at buildings alone, you can see there’s a big difference between building family homes, a hospital and the Burj Khalifa. They’re all technically buildings but there’s a giant difference in the design and construction of all three. This carries over to other areas too of course – bridges and dams will all have unique needs and have to be approached differently.

Some will prefer the more challenging tasks, while others will want something they can get creative with. Then there are those who just want to keep it simple, and all types of other engineers. Whatever the preference though, there’s a job for each and every one. It also keeps the profession interesting because you can do different types of projects throughout your career if you want to.

  1. Stability

The fact is we’re always going to need more construction in one way or another. The population is growing, and infrastructure is ageing. As everything ages it needs updating or replacing, so the demand for civil engineers will be high forever. The variety of the industry also means that any sudden changes or tech advances in one field won’t limit the overall industry.

  1. High Pay

It takes a fair amount of work to become a civil engineer so the rewards are also pretty good. The average salary is around $85,000 in the US, which is higher than many other professions – and if you land the right job your pay can go a lot higher than this. The location you work in can affect the salary a lot too, and of course the earning potential is real high.

  1. Making an Impact

Money isn’t the only thing which motivates people. Some want to have an impact in one way or another. Perhaps you want to make a one-of-a-kind structure which is famous worldwide, or maybe you want to be involved in a project which makes a difference to the community. Again you can find a project to suit any preference in the engineering world.

  1. Using Advanced Technology

The construction of these structures can involve some serious tech at times. There are all kinds of weird and wonderful creations out there. Sometimes it’s big, powerful machinery and drills which can absolutely destroy whatever’s in front of it. Other times it’s clever, interesting tech such as the use of process heating with an air heater to cause chemical reactions, which allows all types of wizardry to be performed on site. If this sounds interesting to you, then click to learn more about and find air heaters here.
