Starting a new job is an exciting, but stressful process. Many workplaces invest in a company recruiting process designed to reduce these anxieties and allow new employees to do their best work right away. Unfortunately, many programmes like this have proven choppy and ineffective. In fact, a recent study found that 20 per cent of turnover happens within the first 45 days on the job. This alarming statistic demonstrates the importance of a great first impression. Here are five ways you can improve your current procedures and get your new employees off on the right foot.

Collect paperwork in advance

One way to improve the flow of your recruiting process is to collect the important data and paperwork prior to the employee’s first day. This simple step allows the employee to review the paperwork in a less stressful environment and gives them time to ask questions in advance. This saves time, and allows you to commit the majority of your time talking about more exciting topics like culture and resources.

Train your trainers

The trainers facilitating your recruiting programme also have a huge impact on its success. Select trainers with an engaging and friendly persona and make sure they have the training required to perform at a high level. Each trainer should also follow a consistent process and should be trained on delivering the content.

Provide a welcome gift

Providing a welcome gift or party is a great way to ease anxiety and make a great first impression. Consider buying a small corporate gift, throwing a new staff member lunch, or decorating each employee’s new work space. This personal touch can make a huge impact.

Facilitate friendships

You’ll also want to make your new employee feel like a welcome member of the team, rather than the new kid on the block.
