Graduation gatecrash – the graduate job hunt

There seems to be an ever-growing trend of graduates being unable to get jobs in their chosen fields. More people are leaving uni, only to end in jobs that couldn’t be more different from the area they qualified in. This trend is frustrating and hard to understand. For the most part, the problem springs from the fact that employers now value experience most. Which is well and good, but how can you get the experience if they don’t give you a chance? If you’re on the brink of graduation, your after uni job may be on your mind a lot. And, the fear of not getting a career you want might be keeping you awake at night. The good news is, there’s no reason you can’t thrive in your chosen field. But, you may have to work hard to get there. Here are a few points worth considering.

Compromise

This may not be something you want to see, but it’s important. The chances are that you won’t jump into your dream job straight away. And, if you do, you’re very lucky. But, for most of you, it’s going to be necessary to make a few compromises along the way. What form those compromises take is up to you. You might need to settle for a temporary job that’s less than ideal. There are industries which are always hiring, and these should be your first port of call. If you do settle for a job like this, make sure to keep your goal in mind. There’s nothing wrong with filler jobs, as long as you don’t get stuck in the mud! You may also need to consider an internship in your chosen field. This is far from perfect. It requires you to work for extremely low rates. But, it can sometimes be the best way to get experience. And, it can also get you noticed by the right people. If you impress, you may be offered a full-time job at the end of it.

Consider returning to studying

You’ve just graduated, and returning to study is the last thing on your mind. But, hear us out. Once you’ve embarked on a job or internship, you may find that the idea doesn’t seem so terrible. We’re not saying you need to jump into full-time education again. But, your taste of the business world may have tempted you to get a firmer grasp on the subject. Business degrees are useful for a variety of reasons. They give you a broad business knowledge and open doors. Something like these UAB online courses will set you in good stead. They also allow you to work while you’re learning. It’s the best of both worlds!

Keep searching

No matter what, it’s important you keep searching. Graduate or not, jobs aren’t easy to come by. Many people apply for a year or more before even getting an interview for the job they want. But, they keep at it. The only difference between success and failure is perseverance!
