Health and safety is more serious than you may initially think

Health and safety… it’s just one of those things that comes hand in hand with heading to work, isn’t it. You have to abide by health and safety protocol to guarantee your wellbeing and others’ wellbeing – whether they may be fellow colleagues, professional partners, customers and clients, or members of the general public who happen to be passing by your workplace.

Now, many of us assume that health and safety is the sole responsibility of employers. Of course, employers do take on a huge amount of responsibility in regards to their employees’ health and safety when they begin taking on staff. They have to provide a safe workplace for employees to operate within, they have to provide essential training to ensure that tasks are carried out safely, and they have to ensure that essential equipment is provided for tasks that pose some sort of risk.

But it’s also important to keep an eye on health and safety in the workplace if you are an employee too! Some risks can establish themselves when people aren’t expecting them to. Sudden changes to aspects of the workplace and equipment could render the area or equipment unfit for use and this needs to be reported. Gradual changes should also be monitored, as you never know what might be the last straw and make the space or equipment unsuitable and dangerous.
