Ideal careers for car lovers

In a perfect world, we would all have a job doing something we love. The reality is, of course, somewhat different. Our loves become hobbies, rather than career prospects. And, the natural progression – in most cases – is to follow the money, rather than the dream.

The car industry, however, offers something a little different. It’s an enormous area with many different career paths that could see you working with your love of vehicles on a daily basis. In this guide, we’re going to take a look at several careers for car lovers that are worth your consideration.

Design

Car manufacturers are always on the search for great designers. If you can get a grasp on your technical drawing skills and understand physics, think about designing cars as a career choice. You could end up in the hot seat, sketching out plans for the next Porsche. It takes a lot of hard work to get there, of course. But, with determination, drive, and good networking skills you can make your dreams happen.

Engineering

If your love for cars is supplemented by a talent for maths, science, and engineering, this could be the perfect career idea for you. Imagine having a hand in creating a mainstream car, and seeing it being driven around by people every day. You might end up on a Formula One team, too, if you manage to get to the top of your game. The car industry also offers you opportunities to create small and vital parts for vehicles. Perhaps you could be the person who finally patents the tech that gives the world cheap, truly carbon free transport?

Mechanic

If you are of an entrepreneurial mindset and love getting your hands dirty, why not develop your love of cars by becoming a mechanic? You can start your own business, or work for one of the biggest car companies in the world – the choice is yours. If you like a particular brand of car, you can specialise in fixing them and become a certified mechanic. If you know your way around Dunlop tyres, Sachs clutch kits, and Magnaflow exhausts, you can get into the car modding sector.

Marketing and PR

Another sector of employment worth thinking about is marketing and PR. The car industry is highly competitive. There is enormous demand for excellent marketers and advertisers to help them get their message across. While you won’t be working directly with cars, you will need to know a lot about the industry. And, it is likely you will find your water cooler moments are spent discussing the pros and cons of the latest Ferrari!

Accounts and finance

Wherever there is business, there is a need for strong financial experience. So, if you are good with figures, why not mix it with your love of cars and seek out a finance position in the motor industry? You could even end up in a business development role, and head up teams to create entirely new vehicles from scratch.

As you can see, there is plenty of career potential if you have a love of cars, which don’t rely solely on being a race car driver! Combine your passion with your other skills and see where they can take you!
