The anaesthetist’s job is to ensure that patients feel no pain by administering drugs and monitoring vital signs during complex surgical procedures. Outside of surgery, they assist with pain management during labour and delivery, and those suffering from chronic pain.

Surgeons treat serious injuries and lead major surgeries, such as deformities, disease and chronic ailments. Typically with the help of a team, they use their hands and an array of surgical instruments to manipulate the body’s organs. Though many perform ‘general surgery’, others opt to become plastic surgeons or specialise in neurology.

Obstetricians and gynaecologists

Obstetricians and gynecologists specialise in the female body. Whereas the former helps deliver babies and perform caesarean sections, the latter handles conditions relating to the female reproductive system and issues such as menopause, hormonal irregularities, and cervical cancer.

Orthodontists specialise in teeth straightening. They typically use braces to make corrections, but they employ other methods as well. They also handle less complex conditions of the teeth and mouth areas.

Psychiatrists treat mental disorders, such as depression and schizophrenia through a combination of therapy, medication, and in extreme cases, hospitalisation. They also encourage patients to speak in groups about their condition at times.

Pediatricians tend to the needs of children from childbirth up to adulthood. They treat common diseases and ailments, such as chicken pox and measles. Some also specialise in performing minor surgeries associated with colds and other common epidemics.

Dental hygienists

Though a dental hygienist salary is at the bottom of the list, it is still a great job to consider if you want to get into the medical field. Dental hygienists clean teeth, provide preventative oral care, and examine for diseases such as gingivitis. Dentists typically have at least one good hygienist on hand. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the demand for dental hygienists is supposed to grow by 33 percent over the next ten years, well above the national average when compared to other professions.

As you’ve learned, salaries in the medical field can be quite high. But earning such comes at a cost: medical schools are not cheap, and it takes years and years of study and practice to make it to one of these prestigious positions.
