Training requirements

The amount of training that you will need depends on the type of aircraft you want to fly. Study.com states that you will need 250 hours of flight time to earn a commercial pilot’s licence plus an additional 1,500 hours to earn your airline transport pilot certificate. You can undergo this training by enrolling in an accredited pilot school, such as the Institute of Aviation at Parkland College, which will require you to be at least 18 years of age before you attend. A degree in maths or science is also sometimes needed to become a pilot, and this is especially true if you want to join the Air Force.

Pilot medical certificate

You will also be required to obtain a medical certificate showing that you are in good enough health to operate an aircraft. During your examination, your vision, lungs and heart will be tested in addition to a general physical examination. You will also need to give blood and urine samples and have your medical history reviewed.

Other skills needed

To be successful in this field, you will need to have excellent hand-eye coordination and strong leadership and communication skills. You must also know how to solve problems quickly and work well in high-pressure situations.
