What to look for in a new company environment

Finding the right job is something that tends to take up quite a lot of time. There so many things to consider when it comes to finding the position that’s right for you: the sector the role is a part of, the hours, the salary, the location… the list goes on. But one other truly integral part of the job hunt is anticipating the working environment.

Many jobs these days take place in offices, where you work as part of a team, or as part of some different teams. You will spend most of your days working in the office, so naturally, it needs to be somewhere you enjoy spending your time. So many different things can contribute to an office environment, and atmosphere and they can help determine whether or not you like the job. For example, on paper, the role could be totally perfect for you. But if the office environment is miserable and you are not happy there, it will no doubt make you want to leave. Here are a few things to look out for when assessing a company’s environment to work out if it’s somewhere you want to work.

The structure

A successful business is run via a clear and workable internal structure. Typically, there is one CEO at the head of it all, with a few executives below that, then a few managerial positions. If you are only just taking your first steps on the career ladder, you will probably start out working under the guidance of a manager. When you go for interview, ask some questions about how the company is structured and how the communication works. To avoid any unnecessary stress and confusion, a clear pattern should be established to handle any internal queries or issues – in other words, everyone knows who they need to answer to.

Past successes

A team that is worked into the ground may achieve some success within the business – however, it will be short-lived. Always judge a company by its employee satisfaction and how long people stay in their role. If people are in the company for many years, find out if that is because this particular business practices internal promotions. Try and speak to some current or previous employees about their experiences there so you can get a real feel for the place. If that isn’t possible, you can always read some online employee reviews, such as these AlgaeCal reviews, which can give you an insight into what life is like working at that particular place.

The physical office space

Before you sign up for a new role, try and get at least a quick look at the actual office space you will be working in. There is a surprisingly close link between the way in which an office is designed and levels of staff productivity. A dull, messy or dark space typically produces low levels of productivity in staff. Whereas an organized, bright and airy workspace tends to nurture creativity and motivation in company staff. Picture yourself going to that office every day for the next year – if the thought of doing so fills you with dread, it’s probably not the job for you! But if people there look happy and there is a positive atmosphere around you, consider it as somewhere you may like to work.
