Careers that don’t require a degree

People seem to assume that if you decide against a university degree, you are destined to flip burgers for the rest of your life. However, there are lots of high paying careers that value skills and experience over a degree.

Here’s what you could end up doing if you choose not to study a degree.

Entrepeneur

Let’s start with the obvious one shall we? Entrepeneurs often have the potential to earn some serious money, just look at Richard Branson, Jamie Oliver and of course, Sir Alan Sugar. A good idea and an even better business sense are essentials, as well as a back-up plan if your new invention doesn’t turn out to be as popular as you assumed. Just look at Dragons’ Den

PR officer

If you fancy yourself as an excellent socialiser with the ability to build strong relations and convincing press stories, this job’s for you. For success in the PR industry, a degree isn’t neccessary. What is, is tons of experience and lots of good contacts in your diary. Top PR managers for big companies earn a hefty salary, but it comes at a price of a high pressure job with sometimes unsociable hours.

Police and fire service

Public service jobs are always hugely rewarding careers but with inevitable shift work. Entry to these careers is often very competitive so building your CV with relevant experience and proof of your passion for the job always helps. They are also often strenuous careers so are perfect for those of you who struggle to sit still!

Accountant

Contrary to popular belief, accountancy doesn’t actually require a degree. Many companies offer accountancy courses that train you on the job, or through an apprenticeship, specifically for life in your future career.

Legal careers

Another surprising one! Many legal firms offer training on the job for legal executives, legal secretaries and even solicitors. This may take longer than the usual ‘degree then training’ route but it’s a great choice for people who want to learn on the job. You also get paid while you are there which is always a bonus!

There are plenty more jobs out there that don’t require a trip to university in order to be successful in, so get working on brushing up that CV!
