Six careers you can get with an MBA

Getting a masters of business administration (MBA) can earn you approximately 50 percent more than an undergraduate degree when starting your career, and it often enhances your chances of getting a job more quickly. This post-graduate degree also provides you with a more in-depth knowledge of the key functional areas in business, including marketing, finance, organisational behaviour and managerial accounting.

Your MBA education will, in turn, arm you with the conceptual skills necessary to pursue a broader selection of careers than your undergraduate degree. That said, here are six jobs you can get with an MBA.

Human resources specialist

You’ll be more prepared for a career in human resources with an MBA due to the knowledge you acquire in organisational behaviour, human relations and personnel management. Then you can enhance your skills on the job. A human resources specialist focuses on one aspect of human resources, whether it’s employee selection, screening and recruitment, labour relations or benefits management. HR is the cornerstone of most businesses, supplying them with the best available talent and keeping abreast of labour laws.

Marketing manager

With an MBA, you’ll have keen knowledge of marketing management, market research and consumer behaviour, which covers the consumer buying process and what motivates people to buy products. This serves as a strong platform for you to create product ideas, set optimal prices and determine the best ways to promote products, which are key job specifications for a marketing manager.

Financial adviser

Finance is a core course in most MBA programs, which provides you with a key understanding of creative financing methods companies use to execute capital expenditures and minimise expenses. On the consumer end, you may find yourself counselling people on their retirement investments or helping them save money for their children’s college education.

Logistician

Physical distribution, a part of the marketing process, is the distribution side of the business. And logisticians are professionals who determine the most cost efficient ways to funnel products through all the buying channels. From a humane standpoint, and if you work for a relief organisation, you may use your logistical skills to provide aid during disasters.

Medical or health services manager

The management courses you take in your MBA curriculum will prepare you for a career in medical or health services management. These professionals ensure that health centres, hospitals and nursing homes operate smoothly and efficiently. And with an ageing baby boom population, you should find plenty of available jobs in this field.

Management consultant

Your management, organisational behaviour and financial background from your MBA program should help you better understand the dynamics of management consulting. Management consultants help companies reduce costs, manage inventories and increase efficiencies in factories and industrial settings. They also help corporations restructure their hierarchies, solve problems of competitive aggressiveness and recommend ways to restructure their assets.

Decide what careers interest you the most before you start your MBA program, and use your electives to complete more courses in that speciality. Also, talk to people in your field of interest to get a better idea on what the job entails. You can also complete an internship in your selected career. But whatever you do, an MBA can enrich your knowledge of business and communications and give you a fast start to a successful career.
