Don’t let yourself become the victim of a bad career

We’re primed into thinking that getting hired is a great thing. After all, the job market is rough, and any job in this type of economy is a positive, right? That’s what you constantly hear if you even hint at the possibility that you’re not happy in your current career. At least you have a job, consider yourself lucky.

However, when you’re stuck in a nightmare situation, and you have to go into work every day, that answer is not good enough. You should not feel lucky if you have a job that is breaking you down. Or, you’re working under a boss who constantly bullies and undermines you. Bullying, even in later years can have detrimental psychological effects. You shouldn’t feel forced to expose yourself to this type of bad atmosphere. What are your other options, quit? You may need to consider this possibility eventually. That said, it should never be the first step that you take.

Speak To Your Employer

If it’s a problem with someone you work with, you should speak to your employer. Address the issue head on and they may be able to do something about it. Most employers don’t want issues like bullying and harassment in their office. They know it can cause major legal problems down the line and lead to an ineffective team. Most people are worried about coming forward in this situation because they don’t want to be seen as the problem. Be aware that if you are being bullied or harassed an employer has no legal reason to fire you, nor will they. They would leave themselves open to a wrongful dismissal lawsuit by taking this type of action.

Is Your Boss The Problem?

If your boss is the problem, don’t be afraid to take your complaint one step higher. You must approach them first though and do not immediately go above their heads. If you do this, they can complain that you never expressed that you had any issues at all. In this type of situation you look weak and like something of a problem. In this case, an employer may see you as a liability. However, if you speak to the individual first, you have a record of a complaint. Wait a few days and see if the situation improves. If it doesn’t, you can then move forward to issue a second complain to someone else.

No Resolve

If the issue is not resolved by any complaints, it’s time to speak to a lawyer. Find a great employment lawyer and they should be able to help. Employment lawyers specialize in dealing with a number of different issues. This includes harassment, bullying, and abuse of power. Make sure you keep an accurate record of what has occurred. You can then present this as evidence of the issue.

Time To Quit

Finally, if it reaches the stage where you need a lawyer, you may want to consider resigning. Be aware that by resigning a lawyer can still help you receive compensation for loss of work. We suggest that you find another job before approaching a lawyer and filing a claim. An employment claim can leave a black mark on your record, even if it is not your fault.
