You may think that you have to spend years in a classroom to obtain a good paying job. University isn’t only tedious, it’s also ridiculously expensive. However, you don’t really need a standard university education to get a good job. There are plenty of great alternatives to getting a Bachelor’s degree you should consider. Below are four.
Carpenter
One of the oldest professions known to man is carpentry. Even in today’s fast-paced digital world, there is still a great need for carpenters. Carpentry is a traditional trade job. It does not require a degree. Instead, you learn the trade via an apprenticeship program that mostly consists of training on the job. After completing your apprenticeship, you can go into business for yourself and make a considerable amount of money.
Pilot
Another career path that does not require a traditional degree is becoming a pilot. Training to become a pilot can take as little as eight months as opposed to the three years required for a regular degree from a university. If you have flight training form the military, such a programme may be as short as three to four months. If the idea of being a pilot intrigues you, certainly seek out different options for taking flying lessons.
Computer service tech
Today’s interconnected world runs on computers and wireless connectivity. Typically, most computer support jobs require technical certifications. They do not require degrees. For example, you may obtain a certification from a specific network vendor such as Cisco or Apple to work with their products. Computer service techs can work for larger companies, and they can also start their own computer support businesses.
Welder
Welding is always needed in construction, manufacturing, oil and gas, and much more. Thus it pays well, especially if you undertake a specific speciality. Rather than a degree, you’ll sign up for an apprenticeship and get a certification. Specialist certifications can be taken independently and there are a variety of online courses that can put you on the right path. Keep in mind though, welding is a very physically demanding job, as it requires concentration and muscle strength.
Overall, consider your options. While you could pursue a degree from a university, you really don’t have to. There are many great careers that require much less than that. The list above is only a starting point for the kinds of jobs available that do not require a degree.
