How important are teachers in helping you choose a career?

Teachers will influence your life far more than you realise, and could significantly impact your future career. They will offer guidance and encouragement, recommend taking specific courses, and ensure your hopes and aspirations don’t just turn into a pipe dream.

From the age of 11 schools place emphasis on equipping students with the knowledge to transition into working life. Many will leave at 16, beginning their journey into adulthood from a very young age; therefore, attaining work experience and focusing on GCSEs is paramount in order to give students the base that is needed to seek employment. Fundamentally, the ultimate goal of schools – particularly secondary schools and universities – is to ensure students develop a sense of social awareness, recognise new opportunities, make good decisions and plans, and start taking action.

Teachers will make recommendations

Teachers will make suggestions if you’re having trouble choosing your career path. In addition they may help you decide what college, A Level or university courses to take, which will also have a significant impact on your future. Every school will also have a dedicated careers adviser, whether it’s in-house or through an organisation such as Connections. These advisers will be on-call to answer your questions, analyse your interests and suggest potential options for the future.

Teachers will help you choose classes

Unfortunately, not every teacher will inspire you to strive for excellence. In fact, finding a class that really excites you can be rare; but if you do, be sure to take advantage of it. You may have aspirations about becoming a rock star or actor, but sometimes it’s the most unlikely subjects that you enjoy the most. Teachers will know if you’re enthusiastic about a certain topic and – even if you’re not a straight-A student – will find far more satisfaction in teaching when you genuinely want to learn.

Teachers will recognise your potential

Teachers will recognise potential, even when you don’t. It could be just one art or music lesson that hits a nerve and tells them, “They have something here.” Everybody has a talent and natural aptitude for something, but very few discover what it actually is. Teachers will help guide you in the right direction, allowing you to utilise your potential to the maximum; and when you’re good at something it’s difficult not to enjoy it! Teachers from certain institutions, such as the TTL School of English, will even tailor their classes to suit your own talents and abilities, which can heavily affect your career path in the long run.

Teachers are trained professionals who have a much greater influence on your life and career than you probably realise. They’re there to make a difference and have endured years of education to get where they are. While it can sometimes feel like they’re being unfair, they only want what’s best for you, so treat them with respect and it will be mirrored back. For them there’s nothing more satisfying than knowing that they’ve made a positive difference in your life, so take note of their advice and don’t be afraid to let them know if they’ve inspired you.
