Proactive steps to take when you have lost your job

If you have lost your job, for whatever reason, it is so important to get straight back on the horse, so to speak. You are only going to make yourself feel worse if you beat yourself up about it. Most people go through career challenges at some point, and the good news is that you are only going to come out of it stronger. So, what steps should you take if you have lost your job? Let’s take a look…

  • Get a new email address – The first thing you need to do is change your email address if you have one that is connected to your old job. Make sure you choose a professional email that incorporates your name.
  • Send a mass email to everyone you know professionally – Once you have set up your new email address, send all of your contacts an email, informing them that you have moved on from your old job. You don’t need to go into any detail about this or state the reason why you have left. Politely ask them to change your address in their contact list, so they have no trouble getting in touch with you in the future.
  • Give your resume a facelift – Now is the perfect time to spruce up your resume so that you have a better chance of securing a job in the near future. If your ex-employer has invested in professional outplacement services, this is something you will get assistance with. When putting your resume together, it is important to cater it to your industry and the jobs you are applying for, and you should identify accomplishments, not just job descriptions.
  • Focus on your social media profiles – Make sure that your Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn profiles are up-to-date. If you don’t have an account already, sign up. Online networking is of paramount importance today, and social media is now one of the easiest ways to land jobs. There are many different ways social media can aid your career, so long as you use it correctly. Delete anything you would not want a potential future employer to see!
  • Pick up the phone – It is likely that you made a number of great contacts in your previous job. Now would be a good time to pick up the phone and schedule a networking meeting with them. You never know what opportunities could arise. At the very worst, the individual will be able to provide you with some good advice about securing a new job in the field, and that’s definitely not something to turn down.
  • Take some quiet moments – Last but not least, now would be the perfect moment to take some time to yourself to really think about what you want to do and what your next move should be. Think about your last job – what you liked about it and what you didn’t like. This will help you to determine the type of company and work environment you want to be involved with in the future.
