Seriously, don’t give up on your career

So you apply for a new job and you are really excited about getting it but something stops you in your path. You feel like giving up, when all of a sudden you are given a new opportunity to prove yourself.

Just when you thought that your new job was falling through your fingers, something new comes your way and all is right in the world of your career. Searching through the job section in the papers and online can become monotonous, so when you find something that ticks all your boxes you are bound to be enthusiastic when applying for that role.

But sometimes, you have just missed the deadline for applying which usually means we have to move back to square one in the job hunt.

Or does it?

A similar scenario has happened to me before, and I didn’t stay on square one. I rolled the dice and climbed that career ladder. I was once accepted to the second round of an interview, but sadly I didn’t get the role due to not being available for the next round of interviews. I gave up on the job as I was really disappointed that not getting the place was due to a small issue of date.

If you are ever turned down for a job maybe because of date, or they think the role you applied for isn’t suitable for you, don’t take that as a knock down. Think of it as a positive, and a chance to move forward.

Stay positive

In situations like this, don’t give up. Take a chance and ask the company for another opportunity. If you weren’t right for the job you applied for, is there another role that your skills would be suitable for? The employer must have seen something they liked for you to get the interview in the first place.

If you were to contact the employer and see what else they had on offer, they would likely be impressed with your enthusiasm and commitment to want to work for them. That is what I did: I spoke to the company and ended up talking about role development in the company for a new job.

So it just goes to show that even though you may fall down at the first hurdle in your career, it isn’t the be-all and end-all. Just pick yourself back up and go for that finish line.
