In today’s economy, finding a good job in construction can be tough. But the market is getting better every day, and there are jobs out there if you know where to look. All you have to do it work hard and do your research. If you really set your mind to it you should be able to find a good job in no time. However, here are some tips to help you get started.
Create a strong CV
The first step in any successful job search is a strong CV highlighting your relevant skills and strengths. A well-written CV, like these examples, will help you stand out of the crowd. Your CV should best reflect your accomplishments and successes. That way you can make sure your potential employees can instantly see what makes you a great option as an employee.
Refine your search
Simply Googling “construction jobs” may not be the best way to find all the opportunities in your area. Instead, refine your search using key terms such as “general labour” or “construction labour”. If you already have some construction experience under your belt, try using more specific search terms (“electrician”, “welder”, or “site management”) to find openings that match your skills.
Get additional experience
Whether you are looking for your first job in construction or are an old veteran, take as much work as you can get. For a first-timer, this will likely mean working as an unskilled laborer, which will provide you with crucial practical construction experience and training. For more experienced workers, be open to taking a position that is slightly out of your comfort zone. A willingness to try something new will open up your opportunities and provide you with new skills.
Plus up on training
The number one way to improve your chances at getting a job is to gain new skills. Identify a key area where you could learn something new and sign up for a class to learn those skill and get a certificate or license. Maybe you’ve not handled heavy vehicles too much, but all the jobs you’re interested in call for some experience in that field.
