Four out-of-the-box careers you will love every day

Say goodbye to the traditional 9 to 5. From hauling anchors in stormy seas to supervising high-stakes blackjack games, here are just  careers that will keep you on your toes.

Safety inspector

While it’s true that, say, food inspectors don’t see a lot of action, the danger increases exponentially in other fields. Drilling inspectors run the risk of spills and explosions when they work with oils and minerals deep inside the earth, and elevator inspectors could plunge to their deaths at any moment. They risk their lives to ensure the safety and success of others. Does this sound like a career that might suit you? Consider a job in safety inspection.

Fishing

If “fishing” brings to mind placid old men with poles hanging over tiny rowboats, think again. Commercial fishing and crabbing is a dangerous, fast-paced job where you’ll have to catch, track and haul heavy shipments of fish through everything from wild waves to shark-infested seas. You’ll have to deal with all kinds of storms and equipment failures, so every day will be a challenge. If you’re up to the task, however, you’ll earn big bucks for your trouble. You’ll also only have to work during fishing or crabbing season.

Aviation

Aviation jobs are on the rise. It doesn’t matter if you’re looking for a career as a pilot, flight mechanic, meteorological technician or aeronautical drafter. Some schools, such as the Institute of Aviation at Parkland College, know that as the population continues to grow, so will the demand for air travel, and that means more opportunities for you. As you can see, many of them are unique jobs that aren’t very well known, so you’ll also have a fun business card to whip out at parties in addition to an exciting day job. If you’re looking for fun, look no further than a career in aviation.

Gambling coordinator

If you love the electronic music of slot machines but hate spending your own money in the casino, this might be the career for you. Gambling coordinators can be everything from game managers to security specialists, and their essential function is to make sure that everything in the establishment runs smoothly. Depending on the night, this could mean approving a jackpot, overseeing a bingo game, collecting chips for a payout or escorting a drunk guest outside. It’s a crazy career, but it’s one that will keep you hopping.

These are just four unusual professions that might not have been advertised during career day at school. If you want excitement, you have to be willing to think outside the box, and these jobs are just the beginning.
