Is a career in health right for you?

There are quite a lot of threads that bind each and every member of the human race together. We all want to be comfortable, we all want a good job and a decent life, we all want to be able to achieve our dreams, that’s the good side of things. However, if something else is true, it’s that we will fall ill, that we will be in poor health, that we will need care and looking after. It’s for this reason that healthcare professionals are so very important to the world, and it is for this reason that healthcare professionals are respected and why the career path is so very rewarding. It’s hard work, but it’s good service with a point; not many career paths feature that.

How do you get started in healthcare? Well – it depends on the role that you are seeking. There are plenty of roles in the healthcare industry that will all have different entry requirements – even starting out on the bottom rung might require you to have a decent amount of experience. Simply put, you’ll need to pick your role years in advance and train in the right direction for a number of years. Working in health will almost always require a degree of some sort, unless you get into the bottom rung of the business side of things. If you want to work in the care of people, you’ll need the right degree and the right education. For doctors, this means intense University studying followed by a medical school education, for nurses, this is almost the same. Either way, you’ll need to get a degree in the right field. Nurses and Healthcare assistants can find ‘fast-track’ degrees though, that can lead to work.

The good news? You won’t be out of opportunities when you’ve completed your education. Doctors and nurses can find work the world over in the healthcare and pharmaceutical industries. There are also plenty of nursing jobs in a variety of areas, including the military. Your education will be rewarded, but it will be a long path.

Healthcare isn’t just about scalpels and prescriptions though – there’s a huge amount of financial work that lies underneath the industry. For every doctor, there is a qualified business professional running the show behind the scenes. How else will a good doctor get paid? A business degree can see you run a practice, but financial backgrounds can get you far in healthcare – chasing up bills and insurance. This is a rewarding part of healthcare, and some have found success setting up their own companies simply to help out medical facilities with their bills.

Doctors don’t answer the phone either – they need dedicated and professional staff members on hand ready to help out. Answering calls, logging notes and keeping medical records up to date is a key part of healthcare. Without admin staff, there is no healthcare industry.

There are a lot of ways into healthcare, and if you’re dedicated, smart and caring – it will be right for you. You’ll need to invest a lot of time into it, though.
