What you need to know before working remotely

If you are looking for which career to get, you might be considering working remotely. Known as a ‘deskless workforce’, this concept is somewhat new, with the technology enabling this kind of arrangement only popping up in the last decade or so. So here is what you should know before joining a remote company.

Project autonomy

In a remote company, you won’t have a manager breathing down your neck at every moment to guide you or criticise you. But you will need to keep your superiors updated on project process. This involves sending videos, photos, and messages to show them your work and ask questions. There are apps to manage a deskless workforce which can consolidate this and make things much simpler for managers and for employees. So be sure to do your research and use the right ones for your company to hit the ground running.

Flexible hours

In a traditional job, you might have to clock in at around 9 and end up leaving at 5 or so. This is typical. But with remote companies, you could be anywhere in the world. You can work from your t-shirt and shorts and do your work at any time of the day. This flexible schedule means that you need to master the art of managing your time so you don’t fall behind.

Less support

In office jobs you will have a lot of supporting roles around you. This ranges from your manager, HR, to other workers in your department with more experience. In a deskless world, you won’t have this immediate help. Use your Google skills and ability to ask key questions on your apps to get the answers you need without staying stuck.

Results-orientated cultures

Judging your productivity by looking busy or logging more hours than your peers is a trick used by many employees in the traditional job environment. But in a remote position, you’ll be judged by your ability to deliver results. Whether it takes two or twenty hours, your boss will want that project done by a certain time. Focus on outcomes instead of appearances.

If you are looking for a new job, you might be considering joining a remote company. This can have a number of benefits. But it’s important to weigh the pros and cons with other positions. Also, you’ll want to use the best tools available for this kind of work. That way, you can enjoy being successful in your new role and set yourself up for promotion down the line.
